September 25, 2017 (Sacramento) – A duck-billed creature called Augustynolophus (Aw-gus-tin-o-lo-fus) morrisi is now California’s official state dinosaur. The giant reptile roamed California around 66 million years ago – and its fossilized remains have not been found anywhere else.

Nicknamed “Auggie,” the Augustynolophus can be seen in the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles, where the only two skeletons ever discovered are on display.  California joins nine states and the District of Columbia in adopting an official state dinosaur.

Governor Jerry Brown made the official state dinosaur proclamation when he signed a bill into law authored by Assemblyman Richard Bloom of Santa Monica.

Bloom created an official Twitter account, @augustynolophus to lobby for "Auggie" as the state's dinosaur because he Tweeted, it is "a Native Californian, Los Angeles Resident, older than Jerry Brown (barely), vegetarian and firm believer in science."
