June 29, 2010 (Campo) – Luis Alberto Duran, 21, of Campo was arrested yesterday and charged with assault resulting in the death of his infant daughter.

On Friday, deputies and paramedics were called to the family’s home in the 1800 block of Campo Truck Trail after receiving a medical assistance call reporting a four-month-old infant who was not breathing. The baby, who exhibited no outward signs of trauma, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Per Sheriff’s protocol, investigators from the Child Abuse Unit, Homicide Detail and the Crime Lab were called in on this case. A preliminary investigation was conducted at that time. However, nothing of a criminal nature was revealed, with respect to this unexplained death.

On Saturday, the County Medical Examiner’s office conducted a post mortem examination. That examination revealed evidence of unexplained trauma, inconsistent with what investigators had learned from the family of the infant.

Duran has been booked into Central Jail and charged with one count of assault resulting in the child's death.
