February 6, 2018 (San Diego’s East County) – A suspect who reportedly carjacked a vehicle this afternoon in El Cajon was captured in Carlsbad following a high-speed pursuit by Sheriff’s deputies and an ASTREA Sheriff’s helicopter.

According to Sergeant James Golembiewski, the suspect carjacked the vehicle at 501 Greenfield Drive shortly after 2:30 p.m.  Around 3:17 p.m., officers in Santee spotted the stolen vehicle and attempted a traffic stop on westbound highway 52 near Mast Boulevard, but the suspect side-swiped a vehicle and fled.

A chase ensued from highway 52 onto 805 and I-5 north at speeds up to 100 miles per hour. Efforts to deploy a spike strip failed, with traffic congested, so the helicopter took over the pursuit.

Deputies were in the process of transitioning the pursuit over to the California Highway Patrol when the suspect exited at Palomar Road and drove into a cul-de-sac and stopped the vehicle. Deputies conducted a high-risk stop, but the suspect initially failed to comply, so officers deployed a beanbag round into the rear window.

The suspect then exited the vehicle, followed commands and was taken into custody.
