September 16, 2015 (San Diego) - CBS Sports reported Tuesday morning that the SDSU men’s basketball team is under investigation for alleged improper benefits allegedly given to prospective student athletes.

Tuesday afternoon, however, the SDSU athletic department claimed that it was not under investigation and had not been contacted by NCAA offices.

A current Aztecs assistant basketball coach is the focus of the reported investigation.  Gary Parrish at CBS, who first reported the news, asserts that the coach offered impermissible benefits to prospective student athletes during the recruiting process.

The Daily Aztec reports that SDSU Athletics reached out to representatives of the NCAA’s enforcement staff after the CBS report.  The Athletics Department responded, “Members of the NCAA confirmed for the University that they have not commenced a formal investigation.”  The department further stated that prior to the media report on an alleged investigation, “the NCAA had not contacted any member of the University regarding an investigation into the program. San Diego State takes all potential NCAA issues seriously and will fully cooperate with the NCAA.”

Under NCAA rules, it is impermissible to give gifts to prospective student athletes, their friends or family members such as cash, loans, vehicles, or event tickets.

With all of this in mind, the question on the mind of Aztecs basketball fans remains: Is the team being investigated or not?
