November 3, 2014 (Ramona) –A man caught on video throwing a dog over a fence in Ramona has been identified and charged with one misdemeanor count each of animal cruelty and animal abandonment.

Gary Sartor of Ramona faces up to six months in county jail or a fine of up to $1,000 for each violation.

Video surveillance cameras at a property in the 1100 block of D Street in Ramona captured an unidentified man tossing a young pit bull over a six-foot-high gate to a commercial building Aug. 28 and walking away. The dog was found the following day by the business owner and turned over to County Animal Services in Carlsbad.

Animal Services asked for help in identifying the suspect in the video and one tip called in to the department on Sept. 28 led to the suspect. An animal control officer interviewed the suspect and determined there were grounds to submit the case to the District Attorney’s Office, which charged Sartor with the two misdemeanors.

The dog, a black and white mixed breed, was examined by veterinary staff after the incident and no injuries were found. The 6-month-old puppy, named Dolly by department staff, was put up for adoption Sept. 23 and she went home with a new owner that day.

If an owner is unable to continue to care for a pet, Animal Services recommends the pet owner reach out to rescue groups or bring the pet to a local animal shelter for placement into an adoption program.

All three County animal care facilities are open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. The facilities are located at 5480 Gaines St., San Diego; 2481 Palomar Airport Rd., Carlsbad; and 5821 Sweetwater Rd., Bonita.
