December 2, 2009 (San Diego)-- Christmas trees bring  beauty to many homes during the holiday season.  But they can also become fire hazards, turning holiday joy to tragedy if safety precautions are not followed.  (View a video  posted at YouTube to see just how fast a dry tree will burn.)

CAL FIRE offers the following tips to help keep your Christmas season joyful--and safe.

  • Never place candles on the Christmas tree.
  • Avoid placing your tree near the heater or other appliances.
  • Keep the tree in water, a dry Christmas tree will burn with incredible speed, a room can be engulfed in flames and smoke in moments.

Be fire-safe, not sorry!
