October 13, 2014 (San Diego)--One of the more colorful election contests locally this year is a race for a seat on the San Diego Community College Board of Trustees between Donna Woodrum, a religious conservative, and  Maria Neito Senour, a professor with a commitment to social justice and diversity.

Woodrum lists herself as a “community volunteer” on the ballot. So where has she volunteered?

She’s the secretary and cofounder of  San Diego Eagle Forum, a conservative group that describes itself as education based on its website. According to an article inewssource, the Eagle Forum advocates for home schooling, believes prayer is legal in schools, denounces Islam and views homosexuality as a disease that can be cured. Woodrum has said she works to book speakers such as former Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann at Eagle Forum events.

Woodrum, has also written a book titled, The Bible Codes and Your Baby’s Name: Does The Most Popular Book Ever Written Contain Clues to Your Baby’s Name.

Her opponent, incumbent school board member Maria Neito Senour, is a college professor with a PhD in guidance counseling.

She directs a Master’s degree program at San Diego State University called Community-Based Block. In 1993, she was named SDSU’s outstanding professor.

According to the San Diego Free Press, Senour advocates for social justice, works to support multi-ethnic communities and has roots in the barrio community in San Antonio as well as inner-city Detroit. She has consulted to over 50 educational organizations, human rights and peace groups.

The race presents a clear contrast for voters in the San Diego Community College District.
