May 24 through June 6, more than 150 local law enforcement agencies statewide will be looking for unbelted drivers and passengers as part of the 2010 Click It or Ticket campaign.

This year fines have increased to $142 for first time adult violations, and $445 for first time children under sixteen. Citations, not warnings will be given.

Currently California has a seat belt usage rate of 95.3 percent, which means over half a million people are still not using their safety belts.

Properly worn seatbelts give a 50 percent better crash survival rate, while unrestrained passengers ejected from vehicles in crashes or roll-overs are up to 35 times more likely to die than those wearing their safety belts.

“It’s not just about avoiding a ticket; it’s about keeping the ones you are about alive,” said Sheriff William Gore.
