June 17, 2010 (La Mesa) -- The City of La Mesa, working with the Institute for Public Strategies, is hosting a community forum on sex registrants and the exploitation of children on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 from 6:30-8:00 PM. The forum is open to the public and will be held at the La Mesa Community Center, 4975 Memorial Drive, La Mesa.
Experts in the investigation of sex registrants, child abduction, internet crimes against children and laws pertaining to the exploitation of children will present at the forum and be available for questions from the community.
Recent events have raised awareness of the dangers posed by local sex predators. A majority of residents in the San Diego region are unaware of another serious risk to our children: commercial sexual exploitation through prostitution and pornography.
Child sex trafficking is a serious problem in the San Diego border region. Children are recruited in locations such as schools, shopping malls, and on the Internet. Prostituted children become involved, on average, in early adolescence, between the ages of 12 and 14. In the US, an estimated 300,000 children are at risk each year for commercial sexual exploitation.
This community forum will help parents, family, and friends of young people learn how to protect them from becoming victims from sexual predators and exploitation of this serious and pervasive crime.
