February 13, 2013 ((Ramona) – An overturned trailer on Highway 78 near Third Street in Ramona resulted in the death of a camel from the Oasis Camel Dairy on February 1.

The dromedary camel, Sahara, was en route to Camp Verde, Arizona when the trailer detached from the vehicle towing it.  According to Ramona Patch, the camel dairy’s co-owner, Nancy Riegler, informed the publication that”unfortunately not only did the trailer hitch fail, but the chains broke.”

California Highway Patrol (CHP) Public Information Officer Brian Pennings said that there was no reckless driving involved.

Calls to the Oasis Camel Dairy were not returned by press deadline.

The website www.Dangeroustrailers.org tracks trailer deaths and trailer failures. The site also has e-books on trailer hitch safety available free from Purdue University. If you use a trailer to transport livestock, you may find the site worth reviewing.
