DEPUTIES ARREST SPRING VALLEY RAPE SUSPECT

March 1, 2010 – Jose Luis Covarruibias, 46, of Chula Vista has been arrested and will be charged with raping a Spring Valley woman on February 27.

Sheriff’s deputies from the Lemon Grove Sheriff’s station responded to a 911 call from the woman at 6:46 a.m. on Saturday.  According to police, she was hysterical and reported she had been raped by an acquaintance. She told authorities that she fought off the subject and scratched him. She was taken to a medical facility and treated for her injuries.

At about 3:50 P.M. Sheriff’s detectives spotted Covarruibias driving his pickup truck in the 1200 block of East Frontage Drive in Chula Vista. Officers from the Chula Vista Police Department were called in for assistance as well as deputies from the Imperial Beach Sheriff’s Station. The suspect was followed to a local Jack-in-the-Box restaurant, where officers blocked him in after he pulled into the drive-through. .

Officers immediately observed fresh scratch marks on the suspect’s face. Jose Luis Covarruibias was arrested on one count of forcible rape as well as additional charges related to the sexual assault. He was booked into San Diego Central Jail and is being held on $100.000 bail. He is scheduled to appear at the El Cajon Courthouse for arraignment on Wednesday March 3at 1:30 P.M.
