Home damaged, pets lost in blaze

December 25, 2010 (La Presa) – A family of five has been displaced from their home by an early morning fire in the La Presa neighborhood of Spring Valley. But the tragedy could have been far worse if not for the actions of San Diego Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Cruz. On patrol at 4:36 a.m., Cruz spotted smoke at the home in the 700 block of Safford Avenue and began pounding on the door to awaken the sleeping family.

Deputy Cruz was able to help all five family members get out safely, though the family’s small dog and several birds could not be saved. The blaze started in the garage and caused extensive smoke damage to the home’s interior. Deputy Cruz was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, then released.

Around 30 firefighters responded to the incident, including crews from Lemon Grove and Cal-Fire assisting San Miguel firefighters. No other structures were damaged. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Red Cross was called in to assist the family, said Leonard Villareal from San Miguel Fire Department.
