October 27, 2016 (Descanso) -- The Descanso Ranger District in Alpine will be conducting prescribed burn activities beginning in October through May 2017, provided weather and fuel moisture conditions permit. Prescribed burns are scheduled to take place in Pine Valley and Mount Laguna, with some work being done around Horsethief rd. The project will cover approximately 500 – 700 acres with the potential for smoke visibility along Sunrise Highway, Japatul Rd and Interstate 8.

The prescribed burn on Mount Laguna will be conducted in several areas along Sunrise Hwy. The fuels consist of cut and piled chaparral and timber and in some units and broadcast burning in timber understory in others. The burn will assist in community protection as well as limiting the severity of a wildfire during the summer months.

The purpose of the burning is to eliminate hazardous fuels near communities which can burn rapidly during periods of hot, dry and windy weather. Additionally, it enhances forest health and helps return the role that fire has ecologically. The work will be conducted in wildlife urban interface defense and prominent threat zones.

Residents in the area may call Battalion Chief Rick Marinelli at 619-445-1042 for further information on the project. Burn notice updates can also be found on the Cleveland National Forest website at:  http://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/cleveland/alerts-notices
