June 1, 2024 (San Diego's East County) -- East County has some joyful June events coming up—including La Mesa's Flag Day Parade, a Star Party in Julian, a Renaissance Experience in Santee, a Taste of Julian, Descanso Day Parade and Fair, Bathhouse Bazaar concerts in Jacumba Hot Springs, live music at the Magnolia in El Cajon, a twilight walk at Mission Trails, a comedy night in La Mesa,a Chili Cookoff with Lemon Grove Lions Club, the Santee Pride Walk, Julian Town Square Music Festival, Santee summer concerts, La Mesa's classic car show, Lemon Grove's concert series opener,and El Cajon’s outdoor concerts and classic car shows, and more.

 

TASTE OF JULIAN JUNE 1

A Taste of Julian will be held on June 1st from 12 :30 p.m.to 5 p.m., showing there’s a lot more to Julian cuisine than the town’s famous apples.

Savor the culinary delights Julian has to offer on this self-guided tour of participating restaurants, as well as wine, beer and cider tasting rooms in the Julian area.  This event sells out quickly each year. You can get tickets online at VisitJulian.com

 

DESCANSO DAY JUNE 1

The Descanso Day Parade and Fair will be held on June 1st.

Roads close at 8 a.m. and the parade rolls out at 9 a.m., followed by the fair at Descanso’s historic town hall from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m.

Descanso’s first community fair was held in 1899 under a tent across the street near the creek.

You’re invited to come join the fun of this rural small town and learn more about Descanso’s history while also shopping at vendor booths, enjoying local foods and beverages, and fun for the whole family.

THE MAGNOLIA’S JUNE LINE-UP

The Magnolia performing arts center in El Cajon has some hot entertainers coming up in late May and June, including Latin Grammy Award winning singer Chiquis, Country Music Hall of Fame inductee Tanya Tucker, singer/songwriters Todd Rundgren and Iron & Wine, a rock opera, a gospel party, several tribute artists, and more.

BATHHOUSE BAZAAR CONCERT SERIES IN JACUMBA HOT SPRINGS

A highlight of those hot summer nights in Jacumba Hot Springs  is a concert series at the Bathhouse Bazaar.

June’s lineup includes swing music with Petunia and the Vipers on June 1, the Clinton Davis String Band on June 8 with folk, hillbilly, jug band and ballads, This Lonesome Paradise performing cowboy noir music on  June 21, and Nick Pagan’s “new-wop” on June 22.

LA MESA FLAG DAY PARADE JUNE 8

La Mesa salutes Old Glory at the annual Flag Day Parade this Saturday. The parade starts at 10 a.m. and travels west through the La Mesa Village, along La Mesa Blvd. Former City Councilwoman Ruth Sterling will serve as Grand Marshal of the parade.

Free ice cream will be provided by the La Mesa Community Relations and Veterans Commission at the Lookout in Legacy Park at the corner of La Mesa Blvd, 4th St. and Allison Ave.

The parade is organized by the City of La Mesa and La Mesa Village Association.

 

STAR PARTY IN JULIAN JUNE 8

The Julian Dark Sky Network invites you to a star party this Saturday, June 8 starting at 8 p.m. at the Desert View Park/Inspiration Point (423 Inspiration Point Rd., Julian, two miles south of  Julian off Highway 79).  Bring binoculars and cameras, or use telescopes provided for people of all ages to view the cosmos,including deep nebulae, star clusters in the Milky Way, and a crescent moon.

Be sure to dress warm for this event, which is free to the public.

Viejas Concerts in the Park

Viejas Concerts in the Park have several shows coming up in the last half of June, including country music artist Terri Clark on June 14,  Banda El Recordo on June21, Noche Latina on June 22,and the American Patriot Tour with Aaron Lewis on June 23.

RENAISSANCE EXPERIENCE IN SANTEE JUNE 15

Step back in time at the Santee Renaissance Experience on June 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event, held at 9000 Edgemoor Drive in Santee, will feature real Medieval style battles, multiple guilds to entertain and educate you, plus pirates, fairies, mermaids and a Madrigal choir.

You can also try your hand at archery, shop for crafts and wares, enjoy exotic food vendors and a beer garden.

This event is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Santee and The Kingdom of Terre Neuve, in collaboration with San Diego County and the City of Santee.

SUMMER TWILIGHT WALK JUNE 15 AT MISSION TRAILS

Sat, June 15, 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

Mission Trails Regional Park trail  guides will lead a summer twilight walk on Saturday, June 15th from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.Enjoy an evening walk in the park and learn about the changes that occur at dusk as the sun goes down.

Walks meet at the parking lot at the corner of Bushy Hill Drive and Father Junípero Serra Trail, across from Kumeyaay Lake Campground. Don't forget to bring along a flashlight and an extra layer of clothing -- it often cools down after the sun sets. For more information, visit MTRP.org/events/.

 

LA MESA JUNETEENTH AND FRIENDS CELEBRATION JUNE 16

The third annual La Mesa Juneteenth and Friends celebration  is Sunday, June 16 at MacArthur Park. The La Mesa Juneteenth and Friends celebration is a grassroots community effort that brings the rich heritage, culture, and fun of a Juneteenth Jubilee to La Mesa, East County and the wider San Diego region. 

The festival is from noon to 4 p.m., and features music including the MLK Jr. Community Choir, African drummers, spoken word artists, a Kidzone with bouncey houses, sport games, arts and crafts, face painting and more. 

Juneteenth commemorates the official end of slavery in the U.S. when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedoms on June 19, 1865, over two years after U.S. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The inaugural commemoration of it was in 1866, and it was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.

SYCUAN PRESENTS LANCO AT THE RIVER JUNE 20

Sycuan Casino and Resort offers a unique way to view a concert this summer, including the multi-platinum selling band Platinum on June 20 at 8 p.m.

The band will perform at the faux-river flowing through the resort, where VIP package options include reserved seats on the retreat viewing deck, exclusive server, and two pool floaties. 

This concert is limited to age 21 and up. LANCO hits include Greatest Love Story, Born To Love You, Honky-Tonk Hippies, What I See,and Leaving Looks Good On You.

SANTEE PRIDE WALK JUNE 22

Celebrating diversity and honoring LGBTQ+ residents, the Santee Pride Walk will beheld on Saturday,June 22 from10 a.m.to 4 p.m.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a rally at the Santee United Methodist Church,8964 Magnolia, followed by speakers at 11 a.m.and the walk stepping out at noon.

COMEDY NIGHT AT SPACEBAR IN LA MESA JUNE 28

Comedians Gene Levin and Carol Johnson are the dynamic duo behind the 4th Friday Comedy show, held every month at SpaceBar Cafe & Wine Bistro in La Mesa. This delightful event has become one of the longest-running free comedy shows in our region, drawing laughter-loving audiences from near and far.

The next comedy night will be held Friday, June 26th from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

CHILI COOKOFF WITH LEMON GROVE LIONS JUNE 29

Are you a fan of cooking or eating delicious chili? If so, you’ll savor the Chili Cook-Off event hosted by the Lemon Grove Lions Club and Lemon Grove Forward Club on Saturday, June 29 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event will feature a chili tasting contest, where you get to help pick the best chili in Lemon Grove, music, cash bar, raffle and silent auction.

If you're confident in your chili-making skills, now's the perfect opportunity to showcase them by participating in the contest. For those who simply love savoring tasty chili, there will be plenty available for sampling! 
 
This tasty event will be held at the Lee House Courtyard, 3205 Olive St., Lemon Grove, CA 91945.

JULIAN TOWN SQUARE MUSIC FESTIVAL JUNE 29

The Julian Community Heritage Foundation will host the 3rd annual Julian Town Square Music Festival, described as “an electrifying musical event aimed at supporting the continued renovation of the Julian Town Square,” a community park & outdoor entertainment space in the heart of the historic mountain town. The concert, June 29 from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m. in the Julian Town Square (corner of Main St. and Hwy 78), promises an exciting day of music, food, and community fun. Julian Town Square, in the center of town, is envisioned as an epicenter of art, theater & community gatherings: a dynamic space for residents and visitors alike to gather, connect, and celebrate the rich heritage of San Diego’s East County.

The upcoming concert serves as a rallying cry for supporters of the Julian Town Square Project. Showcasing a diverse lineup of musical talents spanning genres from rock and folk to jazz and blues, the event promises something for every music lover. Attendees can expect captivating performances the Julian-local Bree Jones Band, theconscious reggae group Ocean Natives, the soulful vocals of Chloe Lou and the Liddels, the trailblazing alt country band Farm Truck, the blues and funk jams of Zavala Sol, and Jeff Berkley and the Banned's all-star Americana combo.

In addition to offering a stellar musical experience, the concert presents an opportunity for community members to contribute to a worthy cause. Donations will directly benefit the development of Julian Town Square, helping to bring this transformative project to fruition.

SANTEE SUMMER CONCERTS

Santee’s summer concert series will be held Thursdays starting June 13th from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at 550 Park Center Drive in Santee.

June’s performers include Cassie B., Upstream and Journeymen.

LA MESA CAR SHOW JUNE 6-AUGUST 29

The 30th Annual La Mesa Classic Car Show & Live Music Event rolls into downtown La Mesa beginning June 6 through August 29, every Thursday from 5 - 8 p.m. (except there are no car shows June 13 or July 4 ).

Visitors can stroll down La Mesa Blvd. between 4th and Spring streets to view classic cars and other vintage vehicles, as well as enjoy live music by local bands and DJs. 

For this 30th anniversary year, there will also be theme nights once a month, with attendees encouraged to dress up in the style of the band performing.

June’s entertainment lineup includes the Farmers on June 6, BlameBetty on June 20, and Zeelund on June 27. June’s theme night is June 20th with a rockabilly theme.

 

EL CAJON CONCERTS IN THE PARK AND CLASSIC CAR SHOWS

El Cajon’s concerts in the park series continues each Friday night all summer long from 6 to 8 p.m.at Prescott Promenade.

There are also Cajon Classic Cruise car shows each Wednesday night from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the same location.

LA MESA CONCERTS AT SIX

The City of La Mesa’s Concerts in the Park will be held in the amphitheatre at Harry Griffin Park on Sundays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., starting June 23 and running through July 28.

The lineup includes the San Diego Concert Band, That Beatles over Band, Drivin’ the Bus, Zeeland,8-track Highway, and Sonic Epidemic.

LEMON GROVE CONCERTS IN THE PARK JUNE 27-JULY 18

Lemon Grove will host three concerts in the park this summer at Berry Street Park (7071 Mt. Vernon St., Lemon Grove) from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The June 27 season opener will feature the Bayou Brothers with Cajun and Zydeco music. 

Other concerts are July 11 featuring the  Manny Cepeda Orchestra Quintet and July 18 with Platinum Beat.

LA MESA SUNDAYS AT SIX SUMMER CONCERTS AT HARRY GRIFFEN PARK

La Mesa's 2024 Summer Concerts will be held on Sundays from 6:00 to 7:00 PM from June 23 through July 28 at the Amphitheatre at Harry Griffen Park, 9550 Milden Dr., La Mesa.

The concert series highlights musicians from various genres, from soulful jazz to energetic rock.
