May 7, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) – April showers bring May flowers--which has absolutely nothing to do with bargains, but what a colorful spring we are having due to the rains. So now is a great time to enjoy free roadside flowers or go to Lake Murray and see flowers in bloom. The tall green plants with yellow blooms are black mustard plants, so named because of the tiny black seeds. The smaller, compact yellow bushes are crown daisies. Both are non-native plants that grow in many parts of East County. Savor these photos of blooms at Lake Murray--or better yet, enjoy a barbecue at the lake, or at home in your own backyard.  http://www.fototime.com/inv/E212805BF181B90.

Are you planning a special party for Memorial Day? Now is the month to stock up on foods for a beginning of summer party. The special food bargains for May read like a grocery list for a barbecue. We created a grocery shopping list for you using the food items that will give you added savings and stretch your food dollar. Non-food items that pertain to entertaining and parties were added to the grocery list as well.

Cookware and vacuums rounds out the list of other non-food items that are good bargains for the month of May. "There are two big seasons for cookware and cookware promotions," says Hugh Rushing, executive vice president of the Cookware Manufacturers Association. "One is in the spring, in April and May, coinciding with the graduation and wedding season. The other is in October and November, with promotions in regard to the holidays."

“Most new vacuum models come out in June,” Ritchey says. The prices on the older models start winding down as winter ends and right on time for spring cleaning.

"The world's favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May."
