December 17, 2010 (La Mesa) – La Mesa Police have announced that they will conduct a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint tonight on Spring Street as part of a nationwide effort to save lives.

"After hearing about the dangers of drinking and driving time after time, most people have gotten the message that if they're planning on drinking, they should always plan a safe way home," said La Mesa Police Chief Al Lanning. "But sadly, millions of Americans still think they are invincible and regularly choose to get behind the wheel after having too much to drink."

The statistics are sobering. Last year, 36 Californians died in crashes statewide with a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or higher, including some on East County highways. Many more were injured, some critically—such as a North County toddler left brain damaged and paralyzed.

Tonight’s DUI check is a partnership with the Avoid DUI Task Force Campaigns and law enforcement nationwide.

If you’re planning on partying, law enforcement urges that you plan a safe way home before festivities begin. Choose a designated driver who opts not to drink, or call a cab, a friend or a relative if you’ve been drinking and don’t have a sober driver.
