February 24, 2014 (San Diego's East County) - Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the Daytona 500  race on Sunday, February 23. It was his second Daytona victory in a decade, at the same track where his father was killed back in 2001.

East County’s own Jimmie Johnson, who won the race last year, came in fourth this time around. Johnson praised his long-time rival for an “awesome job” in his victory.

Pouring rain and a tornado warning sent fans scurrying for shelter and delayed the race for over six hours. Once begun, the race was postponed another 45 minutes by rain, which also contributed to four multi-car crashes.

During the delay, Fox Sports TV filled the air time with a replay of last year’s race, but some fans mistook it for a live broadcast, leading Johnson to post on Twitter, “I hear I won the Daytona 500? Haha!” He added that confused friends had been sending him congratulatory tweets.

Adding to the irony, the sponsor of Fox TV’s rainy-day coverage was the soon-to-be released flood movie titled “Noah.”
