July 6, 2013 (San Diego) – San Diego Parks and Recreation has a plentitude of events planned around East County in the month of July.  There is something for everyone, from Ranger led hikes, playing earthball and star parties.  Below is a list of some of the events happening this month.  For a full list please visit http://www.co.san-diego.ca.us/parks/index.html.

FREE SATURDAY PROGRAMS

Every Saturday

Free Saturday programs meet at the Amphitheater at the scheduled time. Programs may change or cancel without notice depending upon the weather and Ranger availability. The Ranger needs to have at least 10 people for each program to begin, so bring a friend!

RANGER-LED WALK AND TALK - 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Meet with the Ranger, ask some questions and learn about the secret lives of cool plants and animals.

JUNIOR RANGERS - 11:00 a.m. – Noon

The Jr. Rangers outdoor education program is based on California Science Standards. Participants will investigate and explore the rocks, plants, and critters of the park. Don’t forget to bring your Jr. Rangers log book to get credit for participation.

SNAKES ‘N SKINS - 1:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Come see and feel creatures living and non-living. Ranger Jon will break out his animal skin collection and introduce some of the office critters too. Free of charge and fun for the whole family.

CRAFT TIME - 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Remember how fun it was to sit down and make a cool craft? It still is! Come make a project you can keep. $1 donation per crafter gratefully accepted.

EARTH BALL - 4:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Can you imagine a bunch of ants fighting over a grape? That’s what we look like when we play with the Earth Ball. It’s the biggest beach ball you have ever seen! Get exercise and enjoy the game.

TEXTURE SCAVENGER HUNT - 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

A Dos Picos favorite that combines crayon rubbings and a no-holds barred scavenger hunt! Get your group together to try to find as many of the listed texture-objects as you can before time runs out.

NIGHT HIKE 8:45 p.m. month of July

The whole world changes at night. The stars come out and the critters start lurking about. Let’s join them! We will walk in the dark for about an hour on some uneven surfaces and moderate hills. Actual start time will be posted in the Ranger’s Office. Bring a flashlight and an adult.

LAKE MORENA

Fees: Free for campers, $3 day use fee

NATURE HIKE - July 20 - 4:00 p.m.

During the hike you will learn about native plants in the area, and how the Kumeyaay Indians utilized the natural vegetation in their daily lives. You will also learn the history of Lake Morena. The hike lasts about an hour. Call in advance to verify the hike start time.

NATURE STUDY AND HIKING ADVENTURE

July 14 - 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

Join Ranger Patty on a fun hike where we will explore the wonders of nature. You will learn about the plants and animals that inhabit our local community, and how the Native Americans used plants in their daily lives. Bring water, wear comfortable hiking shoes and dress according to the weather. Parking is along Los Coches Road north of Ha-Hana Road.

PINE VALLEY

PINE VALLEY DAYS

July 26 - 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Enjoy a day at the annual Pine Valley Days Festival. The parade starts at 9 am followed by a barbecue, craft booths, food, and games for children.

NATURE SCAVENGER HUNT – EAST SIDE

July 7 - 10:00 a.m.

Join park staff for a nature scavenger hunt along the trail in the preserve. Children will get to learn some interesting facts while enjoying nature. Please bring plenty of water and snacks and wear appropriate hiking attire. Be prepared for hot weather. Meet at the Santa Ysabel East Amphitheater at the Farmer staging area. Open to children of all ages. Inclement weather will cancel the event.

ALL ABOUT JULIAN! – EAST SIDE

July 20 - 10:00 a.m.

Come find out about the gold boom, the development of the area, the short-lived ski resort and what happened to the bears! Learn why the oaks are fading away and what we are doing about it. Meet at the Santa Ysabel East Amphitheater at the Farmer staging area. Inclement weather will cancel the event.

STAR PARTY

July 19 - Sunset

Join the San Diego Astronomers Association (SDAA) volunteer astronomers and park staff at the Hwy 67 staging area for a night under the stars. Come experience the chance to view our galaxy using the same technology used by the professionals. Viewers will get a chance to see many amazing sights, which they wouldn’t normally see without the trained eye. Bring sturdy shoes and a jacket. Clouds or rain the event will be cancelled. Free to the public.

Come listen to Ranger Roger talk about the gold boom in Julian, the development of the area and what happened to the bears. Learn why the oak trees are fading away, and what we  are doing about it. Come and learn and ask questions. The event is open to all ages and is free to campers, or a $3 day use fee.

SONGS AND STORIES AROUND THE CAMPFIRE

July 20 - 7:00 p.m.

Join guest speaker, Greg Hill for an evening of entertainment for children of all ages including story-telling, and music around the campfire.  Meet at the William Heise Amphitheater. The event is open to all ages. The event is open to all ages and is free to campers, or a $3 day use fee.

 

CAMP WITH THE STARS

July 27 - 8:00 p.m. 

Join guest speaker, Doug McFarland as he takes you for a celestial journey through the heavens with his star program.  After the slideshow, take advantage of the multiple telescopes to view the starry skies of San Diego County. This event is open to all ages. Free of charge for campers or $3 day use fee.
