February 17, 2023 (San Diego) - El Cajon Valley girls soccer came home from Yuba City on Tuesday with a win over River Valley High in the first round of Division V CIF playoffs.  Tonight, the lady Braves headed out on the road again, but this time, it was a shorter drive to Clairemont and George Hoagland Stadium to face #1 seed Madison in the quarterfinals.

The Braves had a decent chance, but it was Madison’s junior striker Samantha Valverde who put the Warhawks on the board first with a smooth shot in the 24th minute.  In the 18th minute, ECV’s keeper made a fatal mistake and Madison chipped it into an open net.  Junior forward Devina Guerrero launched a nice snipe from the side in the final minute that hit the top right corner and gave Madison a 3-0 lead at the half.

The Warhawks kept up the pressure in the second half.  In the 31st minute, Valverde’s shot was tipped in by ECV’s keeper.  The Braves eventually did get on the board in the 17th minute on a chip shot off a free kick   Fourteen minutes later in the third minute, ECV lobbed one in and it looked like an upset was coming for a split second, but Madison prevailed and eliminated the Braves from playoff contention with a 4-2 win.  They move on to host the winner of High Tech High North County and Mar Vista on Tuesday.
