SCHOOLS FLAGGED FOR EARTHQUAKE RISKS LEFT UNCHECKED

August 11, 2011 (Voice of San Diego)-- early a decade ago, state experts flagged thousands of school buildings that might be vulnerable in an earthquake. Engineers cautioned school districts that more inspections were needed to tell if the buildings were in trouble.

But here in San Diego County, many of those inspections never happened. Only about 100 of the 301 school buildings countywide that raised concerns have been reviewed, repaired or demolished.

ACLU THREATENS SUIT OVER COUNTY GRANT TO CHURCH

August 11, 2011 (CityBeat)--The ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties has sent a letter to San Diego County Counsel Thomas Montgomery challenging the county's position on a $21,000 grant to Green Oak Ranch Ministries, a church in Vista, following this week's report in CityBeat.

The letter cites the No Aid Clause in the California Constitution and two state higher-court decisions—including one from 90 years ago—which ACLU legal director David Blair-Loy says expressly bans public money from going to religious institutions, even for non-religious purposes. Blair-Loy tells the county it must take "appropriate action" to avoid litigation.

SWEETWATER ADMINISTRATORS RESIGN

August 3, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) --Two administrators in the Sweetwater Union High School District resigned this week.

Diego Ochoa stepped down from his new post as principal of Bonita Vista Middle School less than two weeks into the new school year.

The Watchdog reported that Ochoa signed off on the improper erasure of 115 Ds and Fs from student transcripts while principal at Castle Park High School, and he was subsequently demoted. He said he simply used the wrong form to enter scores from a credit-recovery program.

…Castle Park’s former assistant principal of student activities, Abram Jimenez, also resigned this week from his new post as assistant principal at Bonita Vista High School. Attempts to contact Jimenez were unsuccessful.
