California Offers Tax Relief On Short Sales Of Homes (KPBS)

The IRS recently announced it will not tax people who short sell their homes at the full market rate of the property. The State Board of Equalization says California is following suit, which, the agency says, should be welcome relief to struggling homeowners

 A federal appeals court appeared ready last year to strike down as an unconstitutional invasion of privacy a controversial California law requiring police to collect DNA samples from every person arrested in the state

Study: Calif. prison changes boost property crime (SacBee)

Auto theft increased significantly in California and other property crimes also rose after the state began an initiative resulting in more inmates being released early, according to the first independent study of crime trends driven by the "realignment" program to reduce the state prison population.... Property crime in general rose nearly 8 percent in California even as the property crime rate dropped nationally.
