Sniper attack on power station highlights grid vulnerability (NPR)

Warning that no single authority can order utilities to beef up security at their facilities, the former head of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission continues to raise the alarm about a sniper attack last April on an electric power station in San Jose, Calif..  He says it highlights the vulnerability of the nation's power grid and that more needs to be done to protect that infrastructure.

House approves clean debt hike (The Hill)

The House passed a clean debt-ceiling hike of undetermined size on Tuesday — a vote that alienated dozens of Republicans and led one conservative group to call for the removal of Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) as Speaker.



 

Federal government to expand recognition of same-sex marriage (L.A. Times)

In a new milestone for gay rights, Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. will issue a directive Monday expanding government recognition of same-sex marriages to all federal courtrooms and prisons, and some federal benefits programs.

The Internet giant has been ordered to publish a public notice that it violated French regulations on user privacy and was ordered to pay a $200,000 fine.... / Spain, Britain, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands reportedly have similar cases in the works against Google.

Hundreds of Palestinians riot on Temple Mount after Friday prayers (Jerusalem Post)

Hundreds of Palestinians attacked officers with rocks at the holy site minutes after concluding Friday prayers. The violence came one day after police closed the Temple Mount to avert another riot, following numerous anonymous threats from Arabs of probable violence should Jews be permitted to ascend the holy site

Cameron to Scotland: Don't break away and erode UK's global clout (Reuters)

 Prime Minister David Cameron made an emotional appeal on Friday for Scotland to remain part of the United Kingdom, warning Scots a vote for independence would undermine Britain's global clout and imperil its financial and political stability.

Report: Russia and Egypt complete $2 billion arms deal funded by Gulf states (JPost)

Egypt completed a $2 billion arms deal with Russia and financed by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, an Egyptian newspaper reported on Friday

 Iran: Warships Will Steam Close To U.S. Waters As 'A Message' (NPR)

 An admiral of Iran's Northern Navy Fleet said warships under his command have been dispatched to skirt U.S. maritime borders for the first time, in tit-for-tat move aimed at protesting the U.S. naval presence in the Persian Gulf. / Afshin Rezayee Haddad was quoted Saturday by the semi-official Fars News Agency as saying the deployment of the vessels, the number and type which he did not reveal, "has a message."

Ukraine places anti-terrorist forces on alert  (Reuters)
