October 11, 2019 (El Cajon) – If you see smoking sewer lines in El Cajon over the next month, don’t worry!  The City of El Cajon plans to test portions of the sewer system using a non-toxic, non-staining artificial smoke substance. The test will help locate possible leaks, defects, improper connections and the source of storm water infiltration into the sewer system.

Smoke tests are planned to occur between October 14, 2019 through November 18, 2019 and notices are being mailed to each home and business where the testing will take place.

The sewer testing is part of the City’s efforts to ensure a safe, reliable and efficient wastewater collection system for El Cajon residents and businesses. Smoke testing has been used for more than 30 years and is the industry standard to cost-effectively identify sewer line problems. The specific artificial smoke product being used is endorsed by the EPA and is considered harmless to humans, pets, food, and material items.

During the testing period, plumes of the harmless smoke will be seen coming out of roof vents, manhole lids, streets, yards, and cracks. Crews will be on hand to identify and mark problem areas.
