East County Wildfire & Emergency Alert Service

October 22, 2017 (San Diego) - The National Weather Service in San Diego has issued a red flag warning for high fire danger as well as an excessive heat warning. Temperatures on Monday and Tuesday could top 100 degrees in our inland region and may stay above 70 degrees even at night.

Santa Ana Winds have also swept into our region, which along with low humidity and high temperatures means extremely high fire danger through at least Wednesday.

All County residents and visitors are asked to please take the following precautions:

Avoid activities with open flames or sparks.

Don’t park on dry grass.

Practice safe towing to avoid sparks.

Properly discard cigarettes.

Obey burn bans now in effect, including campfires except in designated campgrounds.

And if a fire does occur, please evacuate if ordered by officials.

The National Weather Service warns, “Any fires that develop will likely spread quickly.”

The public is also urged by fire officials to please report any sightings of smoke immediately.

County officials advise having a “grab and go” kit ready and be prepared to evacuation on just a few minutes notice.  As we saw from the recent fires in northern California, as well as the 2003 and 2007 firestorms in San Diego County which also occurred in October, a fire during these conditions can swiftly burn beyond the backcountry and into suburban and urban neighborhoods across our region.
