May 19, 2012 (Valley Center) – The San Diego County Farm Tour Day, sponsored by the Farm Bureau, on June 16 gives a close-up look at what fresh and local agriculture is all about from those who know it best: San Diego farmers. Eight local growers will open their farms to the public for San Diego County Farm Bureau’s third annual Farm Tour Day, with guided walking tours starting every half hour from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at each site.

This year, visitors will choose one of two tour groups: the East Oceanside/Fallbrook group or the Valley Center group. Each tour group offers four farm sites. The East Oceanside/Fallbrook tour features Mellano & Company, a cut-flower grower; Sunlet Nursery’s indoor foliage and blooming plants, Eli Farms’ cornucopia of vegetable crops; and Kessel Farm, a 25-acre, 2,000-tree lemon grove. The Valley Center tour features Triple B Ranch’s vineyard and winery; TAJ Farms’ free-range livestock; Rancho Monte Vista, a citrus grower; and Altman Plants’ newest greenhouse growing facility. A brief description of each farm tour is available on the Farm Bureau website at www.sdfarmbureau.org.

Reservations can be made online or by calling the Farm Bureau office at (760) 745-3023 for this exclusive one-day event (reservation deadline: June 13, 2012). Tickets purchased in advance are $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 6-17 (children under 6 are free). Detailed information about the tour group selected will be emailed after registration has been completed; registration wristbands and additional tour information will be awaiting each visitor at the first tour stop.  Click here to view the flyer.
