February 19, 2012 (El Cajon) -- A residential fire in the 500 block of Millar Avenue in El Cajon early Saturday morning threatening neighboring homes briefly.  Heartland Fire & Rescue crews arrived five minutes after receiving a call and found heavy fire and smoke coming from the front windows of the single story residence.

Fire crews stretched hose lines to the interior of the house and aggressively fought the fire while a truck crew simultaneously cut a hole in the roof to ventilate the structure. The coordinated quick attack by firefighters confined the fire to the residence, saving nearby homes.

Fire crews confirmed all occupants of the residence were able to escape unharmed. Smoke detectors alerted the residents of the smoke that allowed them to flee the residence.

Fire investigators were not able to determine the exact cause of origin, but a portable space heater in a bedroom was believed to be the cause of the fire. Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at approximately $80,000. The American Red Cross is assisting two adults who were displaced by the fire.
