January 16, 2016 (El Cajon) — Four children and an adult have been displaced by a house fire early this morning that left the family dog dead.

Heartland Fire & Rescue crews in the City of El Cajon responded to reports of the fire in the 600 block of Houten Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the attic area of the single-family home.

Quick action by Heartland Firefighters from El Cajon and La Mesa had the fire extinguished in 15 minutes. Although the fire was contained to the kitchen, there was heavy heat and smoke damage to the entire house. Damage has been estimated at $250,000, including structure and contents.

The American Red Cross will be assisting the family with temporary shelter. They were not home at the time of the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
