January 26, 2011 (Casa De Oro)--San Miguel Fire Department responded to a motor home fire yesterday just after 2 p.m. in the 9800 block of Estrella Drive. Firefighters found the older model vehicle fully engulfed in flames that sent up a thick cloud of black smoke that could be seen for miles away. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion during the fire; early indications suggest a propane tank blew up.
Although the incident was a vehicle fire, San Miguel Battalion Chief Larry Converse called for a full structure response. The motor home was parked in a driveway between two single family homes, and the potential for multiple fires was possible.
The fire was extinguished in minutes, no injuries were reported. Aside from contents, the only other collateral damage was to a section of wooden fence, which the motor home was parked next to.
The owners of the motor home were in the process of preparing it for a trip, as they backed it into the driveway the owner said it began making a strange noise and burst into flames.
Member of the California Conservation Corps were clearing weeds in a field across the street; they spotted the fire and immediately called 911. They also tried to contain the fire with extinguishers, but the flames were so intense the small extinguishers had no impact.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The dollars loss for vehicle, contents and fence is estimated at $15,000.
