May 5, 2014 (Jacumba) A series of brush fires broke out on the side of the interstate about 4:30. The fire was initially reported as a single start, but soon it was clear that it was at least three starts. The fire is on the north side of Interstate eight half a mile east of McCain Valley Road.
The California Highway Patrol closed the interstate for a short while due to smoke over the freeway and has issued a Sig Alert. The freeway is now partially opened with a cone pattern placed behind the fire trucks with lane two westbound opened.
Multiple agencies have responded to this fire, including hand crews, air attack units, including four bombers, as well as multiple units from Cal Fire, Heartland and the United States Forest Service. As of last check estimated burn was at 20 acres with a west wind.
Due to the potential for extended attack, meaning the potential for the fire to become larger, residents of the area should expect to see increased fire department activity.
And this is the CAL FIRE tweet on this:
Firefighters are battling a 20 acre fire off I-8, east of McCain Valley Rd, east of Boulevard (San Diego County). #JacumbaFire
