September 11, 2023 (San Diego) – Flags across the nation are at half-mast today to commemorate 2,996 people killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The attacks by hijacked airlines destroyed the World Trade Center’s twin towers in New York City, ravaged the Pentagon in Washington D.C. and took the lives of passengers and crew aboard a United Airlines plane bound for the Capitol that crashed in Pennsylvania.

Locally and nationally, first responders today are remembering those who lost their lives, as well as the brave first responders who came to the aid of survivors.

San Diego Sheriff’s Department posted on social media, “We honor the unwavering courage of first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice rushing to the aid of others, knowing the danger ahead. We will #NeverForget…On September 11,  2001, we watched an unspeakable tragedy that changed our world forever.  In this video, members of @SDSheriff Honor Guard remember the lives we lost and reflect on how 9/11 transformed their purpose into a life of service.

Cal Fire posted,  “On this day of remembrance, CAL FIRE honors the resilience of our nation and remembers the sacrifices made on September 11.Together, we stand strong.  #Neverforget #September 11.

New York Police Department's 19th Precinct posted last night on X (formerly Twitter), "22 years ago tonight, nearly 3000 people, including 23 members of the NYPD, spent their final night with their families and loved ones.  This evening, as the WTC Memorial "Tribute in Light" shines over NYC, our thoughts are with the families and friends of every soul lost on 9/11."
