May 2, 2015 (Spring Valley)--PaintCare, a nonprofit that runs the California Paint Stewardship Program on behalf of paint manufacturers, is holding a special event to collect old and leftover paint to make it easier for households and businesses to recycle their unwanted paint. The event will be Saturday, May 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Steele Canyon High School, 12440 Campo Rd., Spring Valley.

Paint events like this are a new part of PaintCare that in the past two years has set up 700 drop locations throughout California where residents and businesses can bring smaller amounts of unwanted paint all year round.  This event will accept larger amounts of paint and is a good opportunity for businesses who have been stockpiling paint for years.

There are no permanent PaintCare drop-off sites in Spring Valley. However, there are retailers in bordering cities that accept paint for recycling – each takes back up to 20 gallons of paint per visit all year-round. Three sites are located in La Mesa, including Frazee Paint (5349 Jackson Dr.), Dunn Edwards (5250 Jackson Dr.), and Sherwin-Williams (8784 Grossmont Blvd.). Three sites are in El Cajon, including Frazee Paint (1154 E. Main St.), Vista Paint (1220 N. Magnolia Ave.), and Sherwin-Williams (1604 N. Magnolia Ave.). If you plan to take your paint to these retailers, please call before bringing your paint to check to see if they can accept the type and amount of paint you would like to recycle.  Please visit www.paintcare.org/california for details and phone numbers.

Saturday’s freefree paint-only drop off event at Steele Canyon High School is open to all California households and businesses.

What’s accepted: containers must have original labels; house paint and primers (latex or oil-based); stains; deck and concrete sealers; and clear finishes (e.g., varnishes and shellac). For details on what products are accepted, visit www.paintcare.org/springvalley.
