October 3, 2011 (San Diego) Update 4:50 p.m.  -- I-5 reopened moments ago after being closed from I-805 to Del Mar Heights Road, with traffic diverted onto Highway 56 for investigation into a series of shootings earlier today.

A section of I-805 closed earlier from I-8 to Mesa College has also been reopened.

Three apparently random shootings occurred mid-morning on I-805 at Plaza Blvd., Mesa College, and at Del Mar Heights near where 805 meets I-5.

Officials are searching for a white 2006 Chevy Malibu with two men inside suspected in the shooting.  The license number is 5POM917.  CHP warns motorists not to approach the vehicle is seen, but to contact CHP.

According to 10 News, the vehicle may have been involved in an earlier hit-and-run in San Ysidro. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported the vehicle was last seen heading northbound on I-5.

A victim from the Mesa College incident has been taken to Sharp Hospital with a gunshot wound to the thigh, San Diego Fire spokesman Marique Luque confirms.

A motorist near Plaza Blvd. found a bullet had punctured his vehicle but was not injured.  Shots were also reportedly fired at a CHP vehicle and an ambulance.
