May 7, 2017 (San Diego) – If you live in area code 619 or 858, you’ll have to dial 1 and the area code even for local calls starting in October, with the new system mandatory by April of next year.

The problem is that the 619 area code is running out of new phone numbers to assign, while the 858 area has plenty.  So, the California Public Utilities Commission has decided to combine the two areas. That will delay for approximately 17 years the need to create a new area code and force some residents to change their phone numbers, Patch.com reports.
