March 6, 2010 (Otay) – Approximately 3,000 rider have registered for the Gran Fondo cycling event, which starts tomorrow at 7 a.m. in downtown’s Little Italy with three routes. The longest route—a grueling 101 miles--heads into East County along Honey Springs and Otay Lakes roads. Motorists are advised to consider alternate routes.

Awards will be offered for the King (and Queen) of the Mountain. Riders with the fastest times up Honey Springs road, which spans mile 40-47 along the route, will win prizes for the top three placements in all age groups. The Honey Springs climb represents 1,858 feet of the course's total 5,500 feet of climbing. The medium and short routes do not feature king/queen of the mountain prizes.
