February 17, 2016 (La Mesa) --The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD) is seeking nominees for its 2016 Healthcare Hero Awards. Now in its 10th year, the Healthcare Heroes is GHD’s annual awards program honoring volunteers who help advance the delivery of quality healthcare in the East County region. Nomination forms are available at www.grossmonthealthcare.org. Deadline for submission of entries is 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Entries can be mailed, faxed, emailed or personally delivered to the GHD offices, 9001 Wakarusa St., La Mesa. For more information, contact the GHD offices at info@grossmonthealthcare.org.
Nominees can include front-line volunteers at a community clinic, a junior volunteer or auxiliary member, as well as a member of a service club, community group and advocacy or policy organization. Other nominees also can include first responders or other healthcare industry professionals, including educators, pastoral care providers and grant writers who volunteer their time beyond their professional duties and their regular scope of job responsibilities, according to Robert “Bob” Ayres, 2015 GHD board president.
“We solicit the assistance of all East County residents because we want to recognize those unsung heroes of healthcare whose work might not otherwise be recognized,” said Ayres. “We want to honor those volunteers whose extraordinary care and selfless dedication inspires others to produce outcomes that provide for a healthier East County community.”
Awards will be presented at a luncheon on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at the Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul.
The 2015 winners included an eye surgeon, a retired physician, twin teenage sisters, a parent of adult children with disabilities and the first male president of the Sharp Grossmont Hospital’s auxiliary.
They included: Dr. David J. Najafi, a practicing vitroretinal surgeon with a private practice in La Mesa; Dr. Andrew Alongi, a retired physician and member of the La Mesa Lions Club; Anjelika Cannon and Veronika Cannon of El Cajon, junior volunteers at Sharp Grossmont Hospital; Michael Dutcher, a volunteer at Noah Homes, a residential community in Spring Valley for adults with developmental disabilities; and, Richard Hart, a retired high school teacher and volunteer at Sharp Grossmont Hospital who served as president of the Grossmont Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary in 2011 and 2012. Hart will forever be known as the Auxiliary’s first male president since the Auxiliary was founded in 1952, prior to the hospital’s opening in 1955.
The Grossmont Healthcare District, a public agency, supports various health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County region. It also serves as landlord of Sharp Grossmont Hospital, including ownership of the property and buildings on behalf of East County taxpayers. The District, formed in 1952 to build and operate the publicly owned hospital, is governed by a five-member board of directors who are publicly elected and represent more than 500,000 people residing within the District's 750 square miles in San Diego's East County.
