April 10, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) – Grossmont Union High School District trustee Gary Woods has asked the board to rescind plans to hold a public hearing and vote April 15 on naming the new Alpine high school after Ronald Reagan. Instead, Woods is calling for establishment of a committee to receive naming recommendations from the public.

Woods’ motion follows public opposition to naming the school after the late President Ronald Reagan. Board policy normally requires that schools be named after geographic locations, but on April 11, the Board voted to waive that requirement.
That vote sparked Alpine High School Citizens Committee chairman Bill Weaver to publish an editorial in East County Magazine criticizing the board’s action. “The AHSCC's non-scientific sampling of area residents (www.ahscc.com), suggests that less than 10% of Alpine support's the GUHSD March 11th Board action,” he wrote.
The board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 15th at 6 p.m. at the East County Career and Regional Education Center at 924 East Main in El Cajon.
