July 23, 2024 (United States) – Presidential hopeful Vice President Kamala Harris clinched enough delegates to proceed as the Democratic nominee today before an official vote. Harris was quick to address the public and assert herself as the democratic nominee after she secured the backing of more than the 1,976 delegates needed to garner the nomination.
Today in her first campaign speech in Wisconsin, Harris addressed her party, “When I announced my campaign for President, I said I intended to go out and earn this nomination. Tonight, I am proud to have secured the broad support needed to become our party’s nominee. I look forward to formally accepting the nomination soon.”
Harris did not hold back on her opponents character and spoke about her experience from being a California State District Attorney and a prosecutor before that. “In those roles I took on perpetrators of all kinds. Predators who abused women. Fraudsters who ripped off consumers. Cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. So, hear me when I say I know Donald Trump’s type,” Harris told the audience that responded with resounding cheers.
A resurgence in excitement amongst Democrats has bestowed more than $100 million from 1.1 million donors since Sunday afternoon according to Harris’ campaign.
The New York Times reported, “The next step in the party’s formal nomination of Ms. Harris will come on Wednesday, when the rules committee of the Democratic National Convention is scheduled to meet to set a date for a virtual roll-call vote of the state delegations.”
On a call with reporters on Monday night, Jaime Harrison, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said the party’s presidential nominee would be selected by Aug. 7 to avoid legal risks from ballot deadlines.”
Today in San Diego, County Board of Supervisors Chair Nora Vargas, praised President Joe Biden after he announced he would not be running for re-election, saying that he “fought for equality and to uplift all Americans.”
Vargas also announced that she was proud to support Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Nominee for President, citing her work to protect women’s reproductive health, the freedom to live safe from gun violence, the freedom to vote, and the freedom to drink clean water and breathe clean air.”
Vargas said, “As Democrats, we must now come together in unity to support the next Democratic nominee for President of the United States.”
Vargas vowed, “I will work tirelessly to help get her elected to the White House in November. She is exactly the leader we need to lead our country and make the American Dream available to all, not just an elite few.”
Today former President trump said on a conference call with reporters that he “would be willing to do more than one debate actually [with Harris].”
Although Trump said he was “not thrilled with ABC” because he felt they were favorable to Harris he said that would not keep him from debating Harris and added, “I think if you're the Democrat nominee or the Republican nominee, you really have an obligation to debate.”
Trump boasted that he believed Harris would be “easier” to defeat than Biden “because he was slightly more mainstream.”
Kamala asked the audience in Milwaukee, Do we want to live in a country of freedom, compassion and rule of law? Or a country of chaos, fear and hate?” The audience responded loudly, “No.”
“The power is with the people. We each have the power to answer that question, and in the next 105 days we have work to do. We have doors to knock on. We have phone calls to make. We have voters to register and we have an election to win!” Harris energized the audience with the prospect that she has what it takes to beat Trump.
