January 22, 2012 (San Diego’s East County) – A high wind warning has been issued by the National Weather Service starting Monday at 6.a.m. through Tuesday at 4 p.m. A wind watch will remain in effect through Wednesday. Gale force winds may be strong enough to cause property damage and traffic hazards for motorists, the NWS warns.

A high wind warning means a hazardous event is expected or occurring. A high wind watch means there is potential for a hazardous event.

Westerly winds are forecast Monday, shifting to strong northeast winds Tuesday and Wednesday. Sustained winds of 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 65 mph are predicted. On Monday, strongest winds will be near ridge tops, along desert mountain slopes and adjacent desert areas. Tuesday and Wednesday, mountain passes and canyons on the coastal side of the mountains will have the strongest winds.

Drivers of high-profile vehicles can expect difficulty on roads. Watch for broken tree limbs or downed power lines. Use caution if you must drive and continue to monitor the forecasts.

A high surf advisory, with potential for rip currents, is in effect for coastal areas through Tuesday. Rain is also forecast countywide.
