February 22, 2011 (Borrego) -- San Diego Sheriff's Department helicopter, Copter 10, crewed by Cal-Fire and Sheriff's personnel launched from their base at Gillespie Field in El Cajon to assist emergency services personnel already on scene at the trail head of Palm Canyon in Anza Borrego. Initial reports this morning were that a hiker had sustained unknown injuries and was unable to make it out of the canyon and back to the trail head.

The groves of palm trees, flowing stream and very steep, tall canyon walls make this scenic location a popular destination for tourists as well as San Diego County residents.

The Copter 10 crew landed at the trail head parking lot and loaded a Borrego Fire paramedic on board before flying into the canyon to search for the victim. After the victim was located, the paramedic and a Cal-Fire rescue specialist were hoisted from the helicopter to the victim's location. It was determined the victim had suffered an injury to his ankle. The victim's ankle was stabilized before he was hoisted to Copter 10 and transported to the waiting ambulance at the trail head.
