June 23, 2013 (Julian) – Mitchell Chapin Durbin, 88, was killed June 17 at 5:08 p.m. when the Dodge truck he was driving veered off the roadway and struck a tree on State Route 78 east of Riverwood Road in Julian.
Durbin, a widower who lived in Julian, was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident. Paramedics responded and initiated CPR, but the victim failed to respond and was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Medical Examiner, contributing conditions included chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and prostate cancer.
