February 13, 2021 (Tempe) -  Senior Karli Canale led No. 17 San Diego State with six goals, including the seventh hat trick of her career, and Emily Bennett tallied three goals and Lucia Carballo, Jessica Leckich and Rory Nuuhiwa each scored twice, but the No. 6 Arizona State Sun Devils were successful on over 50 percent of its shot attempts in a pair of wins, 15-9 and 20-9, on Saturday in the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

Game One

No. 17 San Diego State was 9-of-26 (.346) in shot attempts, including 2-of-6 (.333) on power plays, but could not overcome an early 3-0 deficit in a 15-9 loss to the No. 6 Arizona State Sun Devils.

Trailing 3-0 with 1:16 to play in the first quarter, Karli Canale opened her season account with the Aztecs first goal of the year to trim the team’s deficit to 3-1. It was the first of four tallies in the game for Canale, as she recorded the seventh hat trick of her Aztecs’ career. ASU responded with a goal just over 20 seconds later, but Emily Bennett notched her first goal of the weekend and the teams went to the second quarter with the Sun Devils up 4-2.

In the second period, Arizona State (1-0) used its strong inside presence to tack on four more goals. Only a Maddie Higginson goal at the 5:11 mark kept the Sun Devils from shutting out SDSU in the quarter and the teams went to the half with ASU leading 8-3.

Arizona State scored four times coming out of the intermission before a pair of Canale goals in the final two minutes of the period sent the game to the final stanza with ASU leading 12-5.

In the last quarter of the game, San Diego State (0-1) got the better of ASU on the scoreboard 4-3. After an early goal by the Sun Devils, Rory Nuuhiwa picked up her first goal of the season with 4:49 to play, making the score 13-6. After another ASU goal, Canale tallied her fourth goal of the game and then Dani D’Andrea scored for the first time in 2021 to get the Aztecs within a six-goal margin, at 14-8 with just over a minute and a half to play.

The teams traded goals in the final minute. Jessica Leckich scored with 59 seconds to play to make the final score 15-9.

Zoe Morgan (Santana HS/0-1) went the distance in goal for SDSU. She made 10 saves and had a steal in the loss.

Arizona State’s offense was led by Luca Petovary’s five goals and goalie Itzahiana Baca (1-0) earned the win with five saves.
