November 26, 2017 (Clairemont) - The San Diego Kings may be an expansion, minor division basketball team, but they are quickly proving to be winners.
For the third straight outing, the Kings extended a small halftime lead into a decisive victory Saturday (Nov. 25), taking down the visiting Oakland Bayhawks 120-102. The contest made a late move to the Salvation Army Kroc Center when Grossmont College became unavailable due to the holiday.
Still, a growing fan base is embracing the Kings, with more than 500 fans filling the center. Included were members of the El Cajon Falcons youth football program, which recently captured the county's 10-and-under championship.
The Kings, now the co-leaders of the ABA Far West Division at 3-1, rattled off 11 consecutive points to open the second half, capped by a slam dunk by James Hancock, the former standout for Misison Bay High and D-2 Point Loma Nazarene University.
"It's early, but we're off to a good start," said Hancock. "The team is deep and the coaching and has put in a system which really, really works."
San Diego's offense dished off a season-best 24 assists in posting yet another double-digit victory.
The Kings return to action Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the Kroc Center, meeting crosstown rival San Diego Guardians.
