March 4, 2014 (El Cajon)--At approximately 2:15 p.m. Monday afternoon, Heartland Fire & Rescue crews from El Cajon and La Mesa responded to reports of a structure fire in the one-thousand block of Leslie Road in El Cajon.  As fire crews arrived on scene they found heavy smoke coming from a lower unit of the apartment structure at 1016 Leslie Road. Firefighters were able to stop the fire in approximately twenty minutes.

The apartment is considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is said to be from food left cooking on the stove.  According to Heartland Fire Investigators, damage to the structure and its contents has been estimated at $60,000.  Three neighboring units also sustained minor smoke damage.

The family of five was home at the time of the fire, but was able to escape unharmed.  They are now being assisted by the American Red Cross.  No injuries were reported.
