July 30, 2014 (La Mesa)--Downtown La Mesa is getting a facelift.

Construction has begun on the Downtown village Streetscape Project, which will include new landscaping, sidewalks, outdoor lighting, benches, and enhanced pedestrian features, as well as upgrades to sewers and street signs.  The project will take several months with construction expected next year.

Last week, La Mesa’s City staff opted to limit construction to daytime, due to complaints from residents about noise during night-time activities. City Manager Dave Witt says this won’t delay the project’s timetable.

Council voted unanimously to ask the Parking Commission to create a report on the impact of providing free parking –turning off parking meters—during the revitalization project to assist merchants and give shoppers a break.  Council will consider the matter at a future meeting.

Shops in the village will remain open throughout construction, and no construction will occur during the city’s annual Oktoberfest or other major events.

According to the city’s website, the goal of the streetscape project is to revitalize and beautify the downtown area, to enhance its sense of place, to improve its status as a destination, and to solidify its identify as La Mesa’s city center.

Council Vote to end nighttime construction?

Quick correction. The Council did not vote to end the nighttime construction associated with the Downtown Streetscape project. City Staff and the contractor, after receiving numerous complaints directly and indirectly through the Council, decided to end the nighttime construction. This was announced at the meeting by City Manager Dave Witt. Thanks - Kristine

Thanks.
