January 16, 2019 (La Mesa) – The Grossmont Healthcare District’s Dr. William C. Herrick Community Health Care Library, 9001 Wakarusa St. in La Mesa, will host “Keeping Your Brain Fit,” an informational program about how to improve your brain health with brain exercises and lifestyle changes, from 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019. The program is part of the library’s “Wellness Wednesday” series, normally held on the fourth Wednesday of the month. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be served. Advance RSVP is not necessary. Handouts will be available.

Presenter on Jan.23 will be Pat Mosteller, professor, Continuing Education, Older Adult Program, San Diego Community College District. Mosteller, a member of the California Community College Educators of Older Adults (CCCEOA), has researched the relationship between education and cognitive health in older adults based on brain plasticity and neurogenesis. She has been recognized by San Diego County Aging and Independence Services (AIS) for the extensive advocacy efforts she provides locally and statewide for older adults.

Kathy Quinn, Herrick Library director, said the discussion on Jan. 23 will include tips on how to keep your brain sharp, quick and responsive for years to come by making some simple changes to your lifestyle.

“Mental decline conditions, including dementia and Alzheimer’s, threaten all of us, but we can combat these conditions and postpone the symptoms, sometimes indefinitely, just by understanding their causes and learning how to apply brain-training strategies that keep our brains stronger and healthier longer,” said Quinn. “Just like physical fitness, brain fitness can slow, or even turn back, the aging clock. Information also will be available about free Brain Fitness classes and exercises you can do at home.”

The Herrick Library, which opened in 2002, is a consumer health public library specializing in health research information, accessible both on-site and via the Internet. The library is operated by the Grossmont Healthcare District, a public agency that supports health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County.
