July 24, 2024 (La Mesa) -- The Downtown District Sign is moving along! View the Fox 5 interview for the latest update. Construction projects take time and the next step is geotechnical investigations (predrill), which will begin soon and take 6-12 weeks. A predrill is required for:
- Soil sampling and testing to understand the composition and characteristics such as soil type, moisture, density and rock. This is vital in determining the foundation for the sign.
- Assessing the soil’s ability to support the load of the sign. This helps with designing a foundation that won’t sink or shift over time.
- Identifying subsurface risks such as voids, groundwater, underground storage tanks etc.. Identifying these risks ahead of time can mitigate future complications during construction.
Once this phase is complete, a Request For Quote (RFQ) will go out to hire a contractor. More information will be shared once a construction timeline is received.
The Downtown District Sign is a community project led by the La Mesa Village Association in partnership with the La Mesa Park & Recreation Foundation (Fiscal Sponsor) to build a new focal point in downtown La Mesa. The sign will be located in the heart of the Village at La Mesa Blvd. and Palm Ave. and consist of two columns adorned with beautiful brass plaques and 1,512 hand-painted 4"x4” tiles funded through community donations.
If you wish to be a part of history, sign up today for one of the last brass plaques available and a representative will be in touch.
