Update April 15:  Hisaw pleaded not guilty at his arraignment yesterday.

April 13, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) – Kameron Nicholas Hisaw, 19, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of arson in Crest. He faces two felony arson charges as well as a burglary charge, according to the San Miguel Fire Department. His father, John Hisaw, is a captain with the Lakeside Fire Protection District.

“He’s been a good kid his whole life. This is shocking to myself and my family, especially in a job that I do where we spend our lives protecting people and property,” Captain Hisaw told Preston Phillips of Channel 10 News. “We stand by Kameron.”

Both Kameran Hisaw and his father are graduates of Granite Hills High School.  Ironically, Kameron aspired to be a firefighter, his father said, adding, “I feel sorry for those who lost property. I’m glad no one was hurt. They are my brother firefighters.”

Kameron Hisaw is a resident of Crest. His mother, Collette Suites, married John Hisaw in 2007. His MySpace page indicates his interest in filmmaking and includes the following quote attributed to Life After Death: “Hey say they saw me run this way, they saw me run that way, but I got away so it’ll never matter anyway.”

The fire began around 4:40 a.m. yesterday when the interior of a pickup truck was set ablaze at 2111 Eucalyptus Drive in Crest, according to San Miguel Fire. About a half an hour later, a trailer was set on fire at 2128 Crest Drive, a block away. The fire spread to eaves of another house but fire crews from three engines were able to prevent serious damage to the adjacent home.

John Rutledge, a detective with the Sheriff Department’s Bomb Arson unit, told East County Magazine that citizens called in the fires and detained Hisaw until authorities arrived. “As they were going home, they saw two people standing in the middle of the road on the street that they lived on,” Rutledge said.

“The citizen got out and confronted one of the guys and he took off running.” Hisaw was next to the trailer that was on fire, he added, “so this citizen apprehends Hisaw and deputies got there and took him into custody.” A Union-Tribune story reports the resident kept Hisaw in a headlock until authorities arrived.

The second suspect, who was wearing dark clothing and a hooded sweatshirt, has not yet been identified. There is no known motive for the arson. “It appears it was just a random act of stupidity,” Rutledge observed.

Lakeside interim fire chief Andy Parr called news of the arrest “troubling for all of us,” the Union-Tribune reported.

Hisaw is scheduled for arraignment tomorrow. Bail has been set at $50,000.
