February 25, 2010 (San Diego) – By a unanimous vote, on Wednesday a local jobs policy ordinance won approval of the City’s Rules, Open Government and Intergovernmental Relations Committee. The Committee directed the City Attorney’s Office to draft the policy for the San Diego City Council to consider within 60 days.

Proposed by City Council President Ben Hueso, the local jobs policy would require that 70 percent of work hours on publicly funded projects in San Diego must be done by local residents or by veterans. The proposal aims to reduce the high rate of unemployment in San Diego, where over 160,000 people are out of work.

Hueso’s office estimates that the City will spend over $400 million on public works projects this year.
The proposal is supported by labor groups and opposed by the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce.
