September 28, 2024 (San Diego, CA) — Autumnal colors begin to glisten across San Diego’s alluring hillsides in time for Mama’s Kitchen’s largest 20th annual Thanksgiving bake sale. Their pie sales benefit community members combating malnutrition due to critical illnesses, such as HIV, cancer, congestive heart failure, type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Pie sales will close on Friday, Nov. 22, or until pies last.
For each pie that you purchase, Mama’s Kitchen can fund the pie’s preparation, cooking and delivery of 12 medically tailored meals. Pie buyers can choose between pumpkin, traditional apple, pecan and Dutch Apple priced at $32 per piece. To honor the 20th anniversary of Mama’s Pies this year, a mystery flavor will drop on October 21st.
Mama’s Pies invests in delivering medically tailored meals to individuals in need. Among those who donate their time are local chefs, bakers and restaurateurs, serving thousands of Thanksgiving pies. Mama’s Kitchen delivers breakfast, lunch, and dinner to people who are mentally or physically unable to prepare meals due to a critical illness.

“The holidays can be financially and emotionally draining for our clients, making our meal deliveries even more critical as they balance seasonal festivities and managing their illnesses,” Eva Matthews, CEO of Mama’s Kitchen, said. “Without the support of the community during Mama’s Pies, we wouldn’t be able to deliver the nutritional meals that so many of our clients rely on every week.”
Mama’s Kitchen is San Diego’s largest provider of home-delivered meals, and it’s the second organization to receive recognition from the Food is Medicine Coalition nationwide. The organization was originally established as a volunteer response to the 90’s AIDS epidemic but expanded over time to include a vast array of critical illnesses.
There will be several pickup sites for pie buyers to conveniently choose when to pick up their orders, starting Tuesday, Nov. 26th. For individuals who want to participate in Mama’s Pies’ Thanksgiving and who don’t need to purchase a pie, a direct donation of $32 can be made to the “Holiday Feast” fund.
More than a dozen San Diego culinary partners are set to donate pies to this year’s bake sale, including the following:
- Behind the Scenes Catering
- Jenny Wenny Cakes
- Starry Lane Bakery
- Sugar Scribe
- Sycuan Casino Resort
- Travel & Leisure
