November 27, 2024 (San Diego) – The suspect in a 1991 Emerald Hills murder investigated by San Diego Police Department was extradited from El Salvador and booked into the Sheriff’s custody on Sept. 23.  On November 15,  while incarcerated at the George Bailey Detention facility, he developed shortness of breath and was transported to a hospital, where he was treated in the intensive care unit.

Yesterday morning, Sheriff’s homicide investigators were notified that the man passed away at the hospital. His name has not yet been released while authorities try to locate and notify his family.

A Sheriff's Family Liaison Officer will support the family as they deal with the loss of a loved one. The Sheriff's Office indicates it is also working to notify the Consulate General of El Salvador of the death.

The Citizen's Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) representative was notified of this incident. The Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause and manner of death.

As is the protocol for all in-custody deaths, the Sheriff's Homicide Unit responded and will conduct a thorough investigation. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner's Office.

The Sheriff's department has for years drawn criticism due to the high number of in-custody deaths. Though many reforms have been implemented and the rate of jail deaths has decreased, at least seven deaths have occurred so far this year of prisoners within San Diego County detention facilities. This does not include deaths of inmates in hospitals.
